Chester
Chester has all the appeal of a rural, small town. Straight out of a Rockwell painting, hills with a patchwork of farm- and woodlands surround the colorful Main Street, where you’ll find quaint shops selling handmade wares, a wonderful selection of restaurants and eateries, and just west of Route 206, Alstede Farms for locally grown fruits and vegetables and seasonal events. The vibe in Chester is small town rural, much like a sleepy New England town. And with all of its old-world charm, comes an eclectic lineup of local festivals and events. For those looking for something a bit more modern and trendy, just around the corner is the popular The Streets of Chester Shopping Center, offering customers 19 upscale stores like Coach and Banana Republic, in a lovely outdoor setting.
Single-family homes with tree-lined yards are the norm in Central Chester. As you get deeper into the countryside, large family farms with rustic farmhouses, barns, and rolling fields prevail.
As mentioned, Chester is situated among hills blanketed in farmlands and forests, so there are many options for outdoor recreation. From fishing, to hiking, kayaking and birdwatching, residents can head to a number of beautiful parks and trailheads throughout the area including Hacklebarney State Park, and Black River County Park, where Cooper Gristmill (pictured here), one of the remaining water-powered flour mills in the state, awaits visitors at the trail entrance. On the other side of Route 206 is Flanders Valley Golf Course, a public course with an outdoor events space.
