Mountain Lakes

Just 32 miles west of New York City, hidden in the the rolling hills of Morris County, is Mountain Lakes, a resort-like community established in 1924 that is home to one of the country’s largest collections of Craftsman-influenced houses. Nearly a third of all private residences in the 3.1-square-mile borough are “Hapgood Homes,” all wonderful examples of Arts and Crafts era architecture, named after Herbert J. Hapgood, the builder who – along with local engineer Lewis Van Duyne – created this picturesque community situated around nine lakes. By 1923, around 500 Hapgood Homes had been built in the town to meet the demand. Today, 454 of those original houses are still standing.

Mountain Lakes has stood the test of time, still a residential lake community that hasn’t lost its identity or charm. With stone pillars at its east and west entrances, the town has the look of a magnificent lakeside estate, offering its residents tranquility and peace with the opportunity for a variety of recreational activities. The beauty and recreation are one thing, but another huge draw for this community is the top-rated education system with excellent public and private school options for all ages.

Mountain Lakes is perfectly situated for easy access to highways, public transit, and New York City. There are approximately 4,500 residents and it’s a family-friendly community. Residents enjoy events and parades along with activitia plethora of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, fishing, boating, and ice skating, to name some. Newcomers are even welcomed to the community with a party!

When here, it may feel remote, like a vacation paradise, but in reality, Mountain Lakes is surrounded by global and U.S. headquarters of some of the world’s most prestigious corporations. It is also located within walking distance of schools, beaches, parks, public libraries, and churches. Tourne Park has over eight miles of trails for hiking and biking. Climb to the top of the Tourne for a spectacular view of the New York City skyline.
